Sightseeing in Majorca: Bellver Castle
Every visitor that travels to the Balearic Islands, even if he or she does not notice, is breathing history in every aspect. Culture, tradition and a historical heritage that nowadays is shared with everyone. Majorca is no exception, and one clear example of that is the Castle of Bellver, located 3km away from the capital of the island, Palma de Mallorca.
The castle was built in the 14th Century by order of king James II of Aragon, being one of the few circular castles in Europe and the only one in Spain. Currently is one of the main attractions of Majorca and also the city’s History Museum is located there. Many years ago, however, was used also as a military prison, concretely between the 18th and the 20th Century.
Even though the castle is not situated in a high mountain (the top part stands at just 122 meters from water level) the visitor can take fantastic panoramas getting the view of the city, the port, the Tramuntana mountains and the Pla of Mallorca (a valley). In fact, the name “Bellver” comes from “bell veer”, which is translated as “beautiful view”.
The castle itself combines defensive elements with royal rooms, as it was designed in a first moment to host the royal court of James II. It has three towers, one of them separated from the main bulding. The surrounding zone is plenty of forests, which can make the visit to the castle the perfect combination for culture and nature.
As it is open to the public almost every day in the year, the Bellver Castle is probably an obligated stop to every tourist that stays in Majorca for at least a few days. Said that, Optimal Hotels & Residences can offer the visitor a great balance between comfort and quietness in Hotel Cap Vermell – Optimal Hotels Selection, located just above the beach of Canyamel, for those who want not only culture and heritage but also to relax and to enjoy the good weather.
