Natural parks in Majorca
Natural parks are a good option if you want to spend a quiet day enjoying the natural resources that the Balearic Islands have to offer. If you like flora, fauna and landscapes, you shouldn’t miss this chance to know Majorca a little deeper. And if you have kids, this can be a very interesting experience for them.
In Majorca there are five natural parks you can visit. Let us start in the Natural Park of S’ Albufera, on the north coast. This is the largest and most important wetland in the Balearic Islands. It is an old lake separated from the sea by a chain of dunes surrounded by 1.708 hectares of marshes, canals, paths, woods and wild orchids. With 271 different species, this is a true bird paradise.
On the south west coast, there is the Natural Park of Mondragó, one of the areas of greatest ornithological richness. It offers a wide variety of landscapes, such as sinuous torrents that flow into beautiful beaches and oak woods full of orchids.
Around 10 kilometres from Majorca there is the archipelago of Cabrera. It is made up of a group of nineteen islands and islets, the largest ones being Cabrera and Conillera. Its landscape has been kept in its natural state, with a rich ecosystem and one of the best-preserved sea beds in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Natural Park of Sa Dragonera, formed by the island of Dragonera and the islets of Es Pantaleu and Na Mitjana, is in the west of Majorca, facing the village of Sant Elm, in the municipality of Andratx. Both its flora and fauna are very well preserved, being the lizard the most typical animal in the island.
And the Natural Park of the peninsula of Llevant is on the north east coast of Majorca, near Artà. This is a nice place between the mountain and the sea really worth to visit, specially if you like turtles. There are cabins available if you want to stay here for a few days.
